Effect of preceding summer crops and some weed control treatments on annual weeds and wheat grain yield and its components
Abstract: During 1999/2000 and 2000/2001 seasons, three field experiments were conducted at Sakha Agricultural Research Station, Kafr El-Sheikh, Egypt, to investigate the effect of the preceding summer crops (i.e., cotton, maize and rice) and some weed control treatments on annual weeds and wheat grain yield and its components.The wheat cultivar, Sakha 61 was used.
Results revealed that the preceding summer crops significantly affected the total annual weeds in the two successive seasons. In wheat preceded by cotton or maize, number of annual weeds was reduced by 82 and 59%, while, the fresh weight of annual weeds was reduced by 84 and 72% in the two successive seasons. Also, the dry weight of annual weeds was reduced by 92 and 82%, respectively, over the mean of the two seasons, if compared with the values of wheat preceded by rice. Moreover, the preceding crops significantly affected grain yield and its components in both seasons. Wheat grown after cotton or maize produced the highest number of spikes per m2, number of grains per spike, 1000-grain weight and wheat grain yield, as compared to wheat grown after rice.
Data indicated that the application of Arina and Sinal+Grasp were the most effective treatments against annual weeds and significantly increased wheat grain yield in both seasons.
The significant interaction between the preceding summer crops and the weed control treatments revealed that wheat grown after cotton or maize with the application of Arina at 1.35 kg/fed or Sinal 10% at 40 cc/fed + Grasp 10% at 1 L/fed highly reduced the total annual weeds and achieved the highest wheat grain yield in Kafr El-Sheikh region.
