The effect of some plant growth regulators on the sprouting of Potamogeton crispus L. turions.

Abstract: Six plant growth regulators and herbicides were tested for their ability to induce sprouting in dormant Potamogeton crispus L. turions. Soaking the turions for 24 hours in different concentrations of BA ; Morphactin (cf. 125) ; 2,4 -D ; TBA and dicamba increased significantly the number of sprouts per turion. Treatment with GA was not effective in increasing the number of sprouts.
Sprouts induced by low concentration of morphactin (50 ppm) turned brown after 10 days and completely decayed after 2 weeks. However ,the higher concentrations of morphactin (100 and 200 ppm) inhibited sprouting completely. All the tested compounds affected sprout length as well as their dry weight.
