Effect of weed control & soil moisture regume on maize production.

Abstract: A field trial was undertaken during two seasons, of 1994 and 1995 at Mallawi, Agricultural Research Station, El-Minia Governorate,Middle Egypt to elucidate the effect of weed control and soil moisture regime on maize (Zea maize L.) production and its evapotranspiration (ET). Soil moisture levels were 25, 50 and 75 %depletion from the available soil moisture designated as wet , medium and dry respectively. Weed control treatments were Starane 20 EC, Primextra 50% WP , Gesaprim 80% and hand hoeing beside unweeded plots.
Results revealed that unweeded treatment under all soil moisture levels, resulted in low maize yield and its characters as well as high evapotranspiration (ET) rates and concequently low water use efficiency.
Frequent irrigation caused a significant increases in plant growth, yield of maize characters and ET rates.
The study revealed that hand hoeing twice is the most effective treatment as a weed control and achieving higher yield production.
