Weed flora distribution in sugar cane ( Saccharum officinarum L.) fields at Esna.

Abstract: weed survey in 50 sugar cane fields was conducted in Esna at Qena Governorate during 1992 and 1993. A total of 44 species were recorded within survey fields. The survey showed that, the area is inhabited by many weed families such as Amaranthaceae, Chenopodiaceae, Compositae, Convolvulacea, Crucifera, Euphorbiaceae, Leguminosae, Malvaceae, Plantaginaceae, Portulacaceae, Primulaceae, Solanaceae, Tiliaceae and Umbelliferae as a broad leaved weeds (Dicotyledone plants). As well as the Gramineae and Cyperaceae families as a narrow leaved weeds (Monocotyledone plants).
The dominant and common broad-leaved weeds were: Convolvulus arvensis L., Beta vulgaris L., Xanthium brasilicum (Vellozo), Xanthium pungens (Walt.), Ipomoea sp., Chenopodium album L., Euphorbia arguta (Bank and Sol.) Hibiscus trionum L., Anagallis arvensis L., Solanum nigrum L., and Datura sp., while the dominant narrow leaved weeds were : Brachiaria eruciformis (Sibth & Sm)Grisb., Cynodon dactylon (L.)Pers., Digitaria sanguinalis L., and Imperata cylindrica (L.) Beav. as well as Cyperus rotundus L. All recorded species were native plants belonging to the flora of Egypt.
