Productivity & water use efficiency of lentil as affected by weed control and nitrogen fertilizer rates.

Abstract: Two field experiments were carried out in Giza Res. St., A.R.C. at 1996/1997 and 1997/1998 winter growing seasons, to study the effect of weed control treatments (untreated, hand weeding twice, and gesagard) and N fertilizer rates (seeds of lentil treated by Rhizobium, urea 10 KgN/fed.+ seeds of lentil treated by Rhizobium and urea 10 Kg N/fed. only) on evapotranspiration (ET) of lentil yield (variety Giza 370) and its components and the associated weeds.
The most important results can be summarized as follow:-
1-Hand weeding twice treatment caused decreasing in total
number and fresh weight of weeds after 45 and 90 days
from sowing under N fertilizer rates in both seasons.
2-The highest seed and straw yields/fed. were recorded by
hand weeding twice followed by gesagard (prometryne).
3-The highest seed and straw yields/fed. were recorded by
hand weeding twice and ( seeds of lentil treated by
Rhizobium + 10 KgN/fed. urea) or hand weeding twice
and 10 Kg N/fed. urea in both seasons.
4 N fertilizer rates had significant effect on yield/fed., yield/
plant, straw/fed., straw/plant, No of seeds/pod, No of seeds
/plant, weight of pods/plant, weight 1000 seeds while No of
pods/plant did not significantly differ in both seasons.
5-The evapotranspiration (ETc) values of untreated
treatment under three levels of N fertilizer treatments
was higher than treatments gesagard and hand weeding
twice in both seasons. The (ETc) of treatments 10 Kg
N/fed. urea + seeds treated by Rhizobium and hand
weeding twice (238.2 mm and 276.9 mm) was lower than
treatments gesagard ( 275.7 mm and 302.5 mm) and
untreated (379.1 mm and 364.7 mm) in the 1st and 2nd
sasons, respectively. Crop coefficient (Kc) values (0.55
and 0.59) of treatments 10 Kg N/fed. urea +seeds treated
by Rhizobium and hand weeding twice was lower than
gesagard treatment (0.64 and 0.64) or untreated
treatment (0.89 and 0.77) in the 1st and 2nd sasons,
respectively. The water use efficiency (WUE) values of
hand weeding twice (0.834 and 0.698) were higher than
treatments gesagard (0.580 and 0.479) and untreated
(0.172 and 0.200) at three levels of N fertilizer in the 1st
and 2nd sasons, respectively. From the previous results ,
it could be recommend that hand weeding twice and
(10 Kg N/fed. urea+seeds of lentil treated by Rhizobium)
gave the highest seed yield and increased water use
efficiency.
