Control of atrazine - tolerant broad - leaved weed in maize

Abstract: Field experiments were carried out in Mallawi Agricultural Research Station Farm , for two successive seasons 1990 and 1991 to investigate the efficacy of fluroxypr on broad - leaved weeds in maize with special emphasis on the tolerant weed xanthium bar- silicum and Ipomoea purpurea to atrazine at the recommended rat.
All fluroxypyr rates used ( 0. 250, 0.500, 0. 750 and 1.00 L/ fed. ) were very effective on these two weeds with no significant difference regardless to the time of application (3 and 5 or split application at 3 and 5 weeks after sowing ) . These results were similar to that obtained by the twice –hand – hoeing treatment .
For the control of total broad – leaved weed including Portulaca oleracea Corchorus olitorus , Euphorbia geniculata and Convolvulus arvensis recquired higher rates to obtain satisfactory control . Rate of 0.750 L/fed . showed excellent control for total broad – leaved weeds especially when sprayed 3 weeks after sowing or when used as split application at 3 and 5 weeks after sowing . Results were significantly similar to that obtained by the twice hand – hoeing treatment .
