The potential of some insecticides as cotton safeners for clomazone herbicide

Abstract: In 1989 during October and November , three pot trials were undertaken in the green-house at Louisiana state University , Baton Rouge. The object was to detect the effect of different insecticides as cotton safeners for Clomazone as PES herbicide . the work comprised a total of seventy treatments in which four insecticides and one herbicide were used . Each insecticide was combined with the herbicide at different rates ( Tables 1; 2 and 3 ) . Results obtained revealed that clomazone at all the used rates ( 0.5 , 0.75 and 1.0 Lb/A) was found to be phytotoxic to cotton plant . Phorate and Disulfoton appeared with note-worthy effect as cotton safeners for the applied herbicide ( Clomazone ) . Mostly , the encouraging results were found with phorate ( 1.0 Lb/A ) + Clomazone ( 0.75 and 1.0 Lb/A ) as well as with Disulfoton ( 1.0 Lb/A ) + Clomazone ( 0.75 Lb/A ) . Aldicarb and Acephate gave effect . Phorate ( 1.0 Lb/A) + Clomazone ( 1.0 Lb/A) was the less effective treatment on the chlorophyll content .
It is noteworthy that Clomazone herbicide in all cases was responsible for apparent weed control . Such findings could be considered as valuable in the field of chemical weed control .
