Control of broad – leaved weeds in maize (Zea mays L.

Abstract: Two field experiments were carried out at Sids Agricultural Research Station for two successive seasons 1998 and 1999 to investigate the effect of some herbicide treatments in comparison with the recommended herbicide (fluroxypyr) and mechanical weed control (hand hoeing twice) on controlling annual broadleaf weeds and maize productivity.
The obtained results indicated that BAS635 at 20,40 and 60 g/fed., fluroxypyr 0.2 L/fed. and pyridate whether used in split rate (0.4 + 0.4 L/fed.) or as single application (0.8 L /fed.) as well as hand hoeing twice significantly reduced the fresh weight of annual broadleaf weeds namely, Portulaca oleracea, Xanthium strumarium, Corchorus olitorius and Euphorbia geniculata compared with the untreated control. Regarding the growth of maize, yield and its components, the results obtained showed that all herbicide treatments, except BAS635 at 60 g/fed. did not show any harmful effect on these characters. The highest grain yield was obtained by hand hoeing twice, pyridate at (0.8 or 0.4+0.4 L/ fed.), fluroxypyr (0.2 L/fed.) and BAS635 at (20 or 40 g/fed.), but , BAS635 at 60 g.fed. gave the lowest grain yield due to its phytotoxicity effect. The results suggest that it is possible to replace spraying of pyridate at (0.8 or 0.4 + 0.4 L / fed.) and BAS635 at (20 or 40 g / fed) by the recommended herbicide (fluroxypyr at 0.2 L / fed.) without any significant losses in the efficacy of weed control or yield.
