Cadmium, lead, and copper levels in some Egyptian crops

Abstract: Lead, cadmium and copper contents were determined in 769 samples of some vegetables, fruits, cereals and pulses, and spices and aromatic medicinal plants samples collected from eight Egyptian local markets during 1996. Lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), and Copper (Cu) concentrations were determined by Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (AAS). The results demonstrate that 99.9% of total number of samples analyzed were contaminated with at least one element, of which 30.2% were exceeded their Maximum.
Limits (ML's). Data showed that Cu was the most frequently detected element, where the contamination percentage was 100%, of which 19.5% exceeded (ML's)established for Cu. The results revealed that 51.8% of samples were contaminated with Pb, of which 13.13% exceeded its tolerance level. However, 65.4% of samples were contaminated with Cd, where the violation percentage was 2.6%. The highest contamination percentages of Cd and Pb were observed in leafy vegetables, where the percentages were 85.2% and 81.1%, respectively. However, the spices and aromatic medicinal plants recorded the highest violation percentages with Cu, Pb, and Cd contaminants, where the percentages were 64.2%, 23.3%, and 6.7%, respectively. No violation of Cd observed in both of root vegetables and fruits. No exceeding of Cu levels above permissible limits in both of vegetables and root vegetable samples. Data..showed that the estimated weekly dietary exposures to Pb and Cd were 262.9% and 22.3%, respectivley of established.
Provisional Tolerable Weekly Intakes (PTWI) (25ug/kg b.w./week for Pb and 7 ug/kg b.w./week for Cd). However, estimated Provisionally Maximum Acceptable Daily Intake (PMADI) for Cu was 11.9% of set PMADI (500 ug/kg b.w./day).
