Abstract A total of 516 samples of raw vegetab les (tomato fruits, cucumber fruits, water cress seedlings green coriander seedlings, green parsley seedlings, green dill seedlings and lettuce seedlings.), soil samples and irrigation water samples were collected from different localities and screened for the presence of members of enterobacteriaceae.
The results showed that there was a. high contamination with enterobacteriaceae in vegetables under study. On the other hand application of washing with water, vinegar 20% & 30% and 0.1 % potassium permanganate revealed that the maximum decrease in the count of enterobacteriaceae was achieved by 30% vinegar. So 30% vinegar recommended as the best procedure for decontamination of raw vegetables.
