Evaluation of some promising sesame lines for yield and technology characteristics

Abstract: The present field experiment was conducted in Asuit Agric. Res. Station in 2002 and 2003 seasons, to evaluate eighteen promising sesame lines from the national breeding program for yield, seed and oil characters. Besides, the commercial cultivar Giza 32 was included as a check cultivar.

Results showed significant differences among lines in all studied traits in both seasons. While, combined analyses revealed highly significant differences among these lines . MGS 4-8, MGS 2-5, and MGS 3-6, were significantly taller than the other lines. MGS 4-9, MGS 3-8, MGS 4-5, and MGS 4-6, recorded lower capsule height. MGS 4-12, and MGS 3-8, showed a significantly longer fruiting zone, the greatest number of capsules/pl and the highest yield/pl. Seed index varied from 2.987 for MGS 8-14 to4.722 for MGS 4-11, MGS 4-12, MGS 3-8, were higher than other lines in seed and oil yield/fed in both seasons. Oil content ranged from 47.39 to 59,25%, 47.47 to 59.58% and 47.43 to 59.41% in 2002, 2003 and their combined analysis respectively. Major fatty acids comprised oleic, and linoleic. The minor acids were acids were palmitic, stearic, arachidic and lenolenic. Oleic and lenolic acids ranged from 37.60 to 44.50% and 40.10 to 49.50%, for the same respective seasons.

The present study suggests that MGS 3-8, and MGS 4-12,lines could be considered as promising line since they are high yielding in both seed and oil. Also, MGS 2-6, line was superior in oil percent comparing with all lines, and took the second rank after the check cultivar variety in oleic acid. MGS 8-15, line was superior in linoleic acid comparing with check cultivar and all other lines.

Generally, it could be concluded that the four lines, viz MGS 3-8, MGS 4-12, MGS 2-6, and MGS 8-15, can be utilized in future breeding program to improving sesame yield and oil quality.
