Characterization the oil of some groundnut (Arachis hypogaea L.) genotypes based on their lipid components

Abstract: Fatty acid composition and unsaponifiable components of some groundnut genotypes (Arachis hypogaea L.) were determined. The results obtained can be useful in breeding programs.
The results show that all studied genotypes contained high amounts of oleic acid (42.68-52.90%). The highest amount of this fatty acid was present in Giza 4 variety whilst, the lowest level was recorded in 5943 genotype which contained 42.68%. All genotypes contained low amounts of linolenic acid which ranged between 0.11% (1561 genotype) and 0.46% (Giza 4). Also, the sterol compounds (campesterol, stigmasterol and β- sitosterol, ) were present in all genotypes in high amounts (58.84-66.10%). Results of this study indicated that the oil of the studied genotypes varied in the relative percentage distribution of various fatty acids, unsaponifiable components and certain ratios between different fatty acids, hydrocarbons and sterols.
