Differential response of some different grain sorghum genotypes to limited number of irrigations

Abstract: Twenty three grain sorghum hybrids and four open pollinated varieties were evaluated under two treatments of limited number of irrigations (4 and 3 times) at Sids and Shandaweel Agricultural Research Stations, 1998. Split- plot design with 3 replications was followed at each location. Days to 50% flowering was delayed from 69.2 to 71.0 and 72.7 days for the above respective treatments the control 3 and 4 irrigations, respectively. Plant height was reduced from 210.5 to 189.4 and 171.4 cm. Also carbon exchange rate (CER) was reduced from 27.23 to 21.22 and 19.87 amole m -2 s -1 ,while stomatal conductance (SC) was reduced from. 0.21 to 0.16 and 0.15 mole m -2 s -1 . Leaf to air temperature was increased by decreasing number of irrigations from 0.96 to 1.00 and 1.01 and decreasing number of irrigations reduced 1000 kernel weight from 33.6 to 31.9 and 30.7 gms. Similarly, grain yield at both locations from 21.7 from the control irrigation to 16.8 and 14.1 ard/fed for the 4 and 3 irrigation treatments, respectively.
The twenty seven genotypes varied significantly in their response to limited number of irrigations. Some hybrids had the highest grain yield at control as well as at the two limited number of irrigation treatments, although their yield was reduced. The crosses viz ICSA- 47× ICSV- 273, ICSA-47 × Dorado, ICSA- 88006 × ICSV-273, ICSA- 88015 × ICSV- 273, ICSA- 9001 × ICSV-273, ATX 623× ICSR- 89027 and ATX623× ICSR- 93001 were selected for their tolerance to limited number of irrigations. The average grain yield of these selected hybrids under the lowest number of irrigations (severe stress) was 18.2 ard/fed. compared with the average of all genotypes (14.1 ard/fed). Also, the seven selected crosses were taller and had higher carbon exchange rate, higher stomatal conductance, lower leaf to air temperature and higher grain weight, while days to 50% flowering didn't significantly differ from all genotypes and selected ones when tested under severe stress (3irrigation treatment).
