evaluation of seed quality of selected faba bean (vicia faba l.) genotypes under irrigation and rainfed at nubaria region

Abstract: Water resources are limited in Egypt. Therefore, research programs
At agricultural research center (ARC) pay attention to produce varieties of various crops, with particular emphasis on faba bean crop, which are tolerant to drought. Also the expansion of growing wheat in the Nile valley lands restricted the areas available for growing other crops. This led to research for the possibility of growing faba bean crop in the new lands such as nubaria region under rainfed. Unfortunately, in many breeding program the selection of the genotypes is based mainly on the results of seed crop quantity rather than seed quality, especially seed as a material for planting purpose. For these reasons, among others, this study included laboratory field and trails to evaluate the quality of faba bean seed crop produced under rainfall and supplemental irrigation. Seed samples of ten selected faba bean genotypes were obtained from seed crop evaluating trails performed at nubaria region under the supervision of legume crops research department. Laboratory and field trails indicated an improvement of seed quality characters representing 100 seeds weight, seed coat/seed weight, seed conductivity, standard germination, field emergence, germination velocity at low temperature (10°c) as the seeds were produced under irrigation compared with those under rainfed. However, no significant differences were existed between most quality characters. Furthermore, the reduction in seed germination and seedling vigor after aging for 8 days or more was lower for seeds produced under rainfed than those produced under irrigation. The data of chemical analysis showed a decrease of crude protein and phosphorous and an increase of carbohydrate content of seeds produced under rainfed compared to seeds produced under irrigation. Correlation coefficients for the relationships of seed quality characters were significant, indicating the effect of these characters each other. Finally, in the light of the results of this study it is possible to produce faba bean seed crop at nubaria region under rainfed, especially from the genotypes Giza Blanca, com60/1775/88,711/778/89 and 606/309/86 provided planting irrigation is guaranteed
