PHYSIOLOGICAL PERFORMANCE AND YIELD OF SOME RICE CULTIVARS AS AFFECTED BY DIFFERENT IRRIGATION INTERVALS

Abstract: ABSTRACT
Two field experiments were conducted at the Experimental Farm of Rice Research & Training Center, Sakha, Kafr El-Sheikh, Egypt, during 2002 and 2003 seasons. The study aimed to understanding the performance of eight rice cultivars namely, Sakha 101, Sakha 102, Sakha 103, Sakha 104, Giza 177, Giza 178, Giza 182 and Egyptian Yasmine under different irrigation intervals i.e. irrigation every 3 (continuous flooding), 6 and 12 days. The experiments were laid out in a split plot design where irrigation intervals were in the main plots and cultivars were in the sub plots.
The main results revealed that most of growth analysis and attributes as well as yield and its components were significantly affected by the irrigation treatments. Dry matter production, leaf area index, plant height, number of tillers/m2, number of panicles/m2, panicle length, total grains/panicle, sink capacity, panicle grain weight, 1000-grain weight, grain yield, straw yield and grain/straw ratio were significantly decreased as irrigation intervals increased up to 12 days in both seasons. On the other hand, unfilled grains % and panicle density were increased.
The rice cultivars varied in their response to water stress. In both seasons Sakha 101, Sakha 104 and Giza 178 gave nearly the same yield and surpassed the yield of the other cultivars, while the short duration cultivars Sakha102, Sakha 103 and Giza 177 as well as the aromatic one (E. Yasmine) were highly affected by water stress up to 12 days and gave yield reduction by about 0.47, 0.49, 0.46 and 51 % over both seasons, respectively. Generally, Sakha 101, Sakha 104 and Giza 178 rice cultivars can be grown better in the irrigated areas where water is limited.
