giza 129 and giza 130, two newly released hull-less barley varieties for irrigated lands in egypt

Abstract: The paper decides the development and the description of Giza 129 and Giza 130, two six rowed spring type hull-less barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) varieties selected by the Egyptian/French Hull-Less Barley Project, Field Crops Research Institute at Giza, Egypt and released in October 2001. They have been selected for the irrigated lands as drought tolerant, high yielding, disease resistant and early maturing varieties. Giza 129 was selected from the cross “Deir Alla 106/Cel//As46/Aths*2” using the pedigree method, Giza 130 from the cross “Comp.cross 229//Bco Mr/ DZ02391/3/Deir Alla 106” using the bulk method. The two varieties have been evaluated for four seasons in four levels of experiments including: Screening, Preliminary, Advanced and multi-location yield trials as well as farmer’s fields (On-Farm) trials from 1998/1999 to 2001/2002. Giza 123 the recommended hull-led barley variety was used as check variety in this study.
Results of thirty-two trials showed that the two new hull-less barley varieties Giza 129 and Giza 130 outyielded the national check Giza 123 significantly by 13.7 and 7.5%, respectively. The two varieties are also more stable, with better reaction to barley diseases and higher protein and -glucan contents than the check Giza 123 and the wheat cultivar Sakha 69. DNA profiling was used for fingerprinting the two new varieties.
