Abstract: the present study was carried out at the field of AI – Genneiza Agricultural Research Station during 2002/2003 and 2003 /2004 growing seasons to evaluate seven bread wheat varieties and lines which were used in a half diallell cross to estimate the type and relative amount of genetic variance components and combining ability for yield and some of its attributes . Genotypes mean squares were significant for all traits studied except for plant height . Parent vs. crosses mean squares as an indication to average heterosis over all crosses were found to be highly significant for all traits under investigation except for number of days to heading, main culm ear weight and grain yield per plant . Significant GCA mean squares along with significant SCA mean Squares were detected for all traits studied except spike length, main culm ear weight indicating the importance of both additive and non additive variances in controlling these traits studied, indicating the greater importance of role additive and additive x additive genetic effects in the inheritance of most traits studied . The best combiners for plant height were p3 , p4, p5, and p7 the parental lines p1,p4,p6 and p7 were found to be the best combiners for number of days to heading and p1 was detected to be the best combiner for spike length and number of spikelets / spikes , spike weight and grain yield . Also, parents . p6 was the best combiner for main culm ear weight and 1000- grain weight . The highest desirable SCA effects were recorded in the cross (p2×p3) for: spike length, main culm ear weight and grain yield/plant the cross (p5×p7) showed significant positive SCA effect for , number of spikes/plant and grain yield/ plant and the cross (p1 ×p7) showed significant SCA effects, for number of days to heading, plant height , main culm ear weight and 1000- grain weight , However (p2×p6) showed significant SCA for days to heading and 1000- grain weight only the cross (p5×p5) showed significant SCA effects for number of days to heading and number of spikelets/spikes Significant SCA effects were detected by the cross (p4×p6) for number of days to .Heading and plant height and by the cross .(p5×p6) to heading and number of spikes / plant Key words: Wheat, combining ability, additive , dominance, gene action heritability .
