The Effect of Environment on Performance, Heterosis and Combining Ability in Grain Sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench

Abstract: The present investigation was carried out to study the performance, heterosis and combining ability in grain sorghum hybrids by using line x tester analysis. Twenty-seven crosses were obtained by crossing nine cytoplasmic male sterile lines (CMS-lines) with three restorers lines (R-lines) at Shandaweel in summer of 2003 season. Forty genotypes (27 crosses, their parental lines (12) and the hybrid Shandaweel-6 as check) were evaluated in summer growing season 2004 in three locations, Assiut; Shandaweel Agric. Res. Stations (ARC) and Qena Agric. Res-Farm, (South Valley University) for days to 50% blooming, plant height, 1000- grain weight and grain yield / plant.
The combined analysis of variance over locations, showed highly significant differences among parents and crosses and significant interaction of parents and crosses with locations for all studied traits. Data for grain yield / plant revealed that 23 crosses out of 27 crosses significantly out-yielded the check (sh-6) at Shandaweel and none of them out-yielded the check (sh-6) at both other locations (Assuit and Qena) and over the three locations. In-addition, the CMS-line (SPRU-94009-A) and R-line (RTX-430) had positive significant GCA effects for 1000-grain weight and grain yield / plant. Also, the cross between them (SPRU-94009-A x RTX- 430) had positive significant values in heterosis and SCA effects for both previous traits and it yielded approximately equal to the check hybrid (sh-6) but it was significantly earlier than the check in blooming date. This cross will be subjected to large-scale field-testing to ascertain its suitability for release as a commercial hybrid.
