Phenotypic stability of some grain sorghum genotypes (Sorghum bicolor ( L.) Moench) under different environments

Abstract: Twelve-grain sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L. Moench) genotypes (varieties and hybrids) of different geographic origins and a wide genetic diversity were evaluated (under eight environments, the combinations of 2 Years x 4 Locations) during 2004 and 2005 summer seasons, at Shandaweel, Agric .Res. Sta., Sides, Agric. Res. Sta., Nubaria, Agric. Res. Sta., and Assiut, Res. Sta. (ARC), Egypt.
Combined analysis over all environments showed highly significant differences among genotypes, environments, and genotype x environment interaction for the studied traits. Average of genotypes over all environments for days to 50 % flowering, plant height, grain yield / plant and 1000–kernel weight, ranged from 70.48 to 77.22 days, 146.88 to 220.88 cm, 52.44 to 88.62g, and 25.93 to 32.44g, respectively.
Average over all genotypes, Shandaweel location exerted the highest 1000- kernel weight in two seasons (32.43 and 32.17 g).
The joint regression analysis of variance showed significant and highly significant differences among genotypes, environments as well as genotype x environment interaction for the studied traits in this work.
The stability parameters indicated that genotypes ICSV-138, Advanced-3, Advanced-6, Advanced-5,Advanced-2 and Advanced-7for days to 50 % flowering; no.1 (Zanzibar), 2 (GD-47822), 3 (ICSV-138), 10 (Advanced-2) and 12 (SH-6) for plant height; no.3 (ICSV-138) and 4 (ICSR-93019) for grain yield / plant; no. 2 (GD-47822), 3 (ICSV-138), 4 (ICSR-93019), 5 (H-106-516), 6 (GD-47813), 10 (Advanced-2) and 12 (SH-6) for 1000-kernel weight, exhibited insignificant regression coefficient (bi) from unity and deviation from regression (s²d) from zero.
Regarding the stable grain sorghum genotypes for grain yield / plant, only two genotypes namely, ICSV-138 and ICSR-93019 were stable.
