Heritability and Combining Ability of Yield and Its Components and Earliness in Lentil

Abstract: ABSTRACT

The variability generated in a diallel cross between eight genotypes of yield, its components and earliness was studied in the F1 and F2 generations of lentil (Lens culinaris Medik.). The average hetrosis values of F1 based on mid-parent means for seed yield/plant, straw yield/plant and number of pods/plant were 31.8, 23.7 and 40.3 %, respectively. No significant hetrosis was found for number of seeds/pod, 100-seed weight and time of 50 % flowering. Combining ability analysis showed that, the genetic variance for number of seeds/pod, seed weight and time to flowering was mainly additive. Seed yield/plant exhibited predominant role of non-additive genetic variance and low narrow sense heritability. The mean narrow sense heritability values of seed weight and time to flowering were 0.69 and 0.65.The parental values of these characters, with straw yield/plant, gave good predictability of the performance of the parents in hybrid combination.
