Qualitative and Quantitative Characters and Their Associations of Lentil Germplsm
Abstract: ABSTRACT
This study aimed to describe the lentil germplsm accessions available at the agriculture research center in Egypt and to identify entries adapted to the Egyptian conditions and have high yield potential. A total of 79 accessions were evaluated for eight qualitative and ten quantitative characters at Giza, in 1995/96 and 1996/97 seasons. Considerable variation available to improve seed yield and number of pods/plant was observed and there is opportunity for improving these characters by selection. Nine accessions exceeded the local check Giza 9 in seed yield by 41-67 % and matured earlier. These promising lines are considered for further evaluation. Correlation between qualitative and quantitative characters revealed that indirect selection for high seed yield in this germplasm could be made by selection for dense leaf pubescence, rudimentary tendril type, and violet flower characters.
