Environmental Impact of Integrated Control For Orobanche in Faba bean Crop

Abstract: ABSTRACT

Two field experiments were carried out at Sids Agricultural Research Station , Beni_Suef Governorate in 1996/79 and 1997/98 winter seasons to evaluate the efficincy of nine Orobanche control programs in naturally infected soil with broomrape and their side effect on ecosystem of faba bean production . the following nine treatment were applied : soil flooding , delay sowing for a month , soil solarization , spray with glyphosate , integrated control , non-chemical integrated control , plant Orobanche tolerant varities Giza 674 and Giza 924 and check treatment with Giza 2 ( susceptible variety) . the results indicate that treatments: delay sowing for one month, glyphosate application . integrated control . non-chemical integrated control and Giza 924 ( Orobanche tolerant var.) had the lowest dry weight of Orobanche /m2 with percentage reduction values , relative to the control of 85.1 , 85.6 , 85.3 , 74.5 and 84.0% respectively. Non- chemical integrated control treatment gave the highest seed yield ( 1045 kg / fed) and showed significantly more root nodules / faba bean plant than the control ( 20.5%) 20.5% . It maintains the environment clean without chemical pollution , so it could be the most promising treatment . However , because this control package includes soil flooding , which may be difficult to apply by some farmers , we recommend the use of Giza 429 and / or late sowing as an alternative Orobanche control treatment . Although , glyphosate application .
( twice) resulted an effective control of Orobanche infestation and reasonable yield , using glyphosate by farmers may not be completely safe due to misuse . the present study indicates that there was no negative effect result from application of the tested treatments on either faba bean root nodulation or native soil microorganisms . the effective control of Orbanche could be realized without damage to the environment.
