Quantitative Evaluation Two Methods for Measuring Drought Tolerance in Lentil

Abstract: ABSTRACT

In Egypt emphasis is being made to grow lentil ( Lens culinaris Medikus) under the low rainfall condition in north Sinai . therefore the improvement of drought tolerance is a major of the lentil breeding program in Egypt . the aim of this study was to assess the utility of a drought tolerance index based on minimization of yield reduction in dry compared with favorable condition ( drought susceptibility index, s) and a superiority measure ( p) based on the mean squares between the squares between the cultivar's response and the maximum response averaged over all location . Twenty-five Egyption land races and 25 exotic genotypes were grown were in separate and adjusted experiments under low and adequate moisture condition . the genotypes, Family 234, Ill 6025, Ill 3715 and Ill 5821 were the most tolerant to dry conditions . In addition , the genotypes 270,91 , 273 , 316 , 300 , and Ill 3693 , 6025 , 3715 , 5782 , 3490 showed general adaptability. All these genotypes should be exploited in lentil breeding program . selection for both low s and high yield under dry environment would be a useful selection criterion to improve drought tolerance in lentil, the superiority measure p could be a useful method to quantify genotypic performance.

Key words: drought susceptibility index , Lens culinaris , superiority measure .
