Influence of Between-and Within- Row Spacings on Seed Yield and Seed Yield Traits of Lentil

Abstract: ABSTRACT
Because of the scarcity of information on the optimum plant population for maximum lentil yield production in Egypt , this study was undertaken in 1988/89 and 1989/90 and components of seed yield were studied to estimate the effects of between – and within-row plant spacing . sma11-and large-seeded cultivars , i.e. Giza 370 and Precoz , were studied . Row spacings of 15 and 30 cm were used , with 1.5, 3 and 6 cm spacings between plants within rows, which resulted in plant population densities of 56-444 plants/m2.

It was evident that large seeded cultivar ( Precoz) matured earlier and yielded higher than the small seeded cultivar ( Giza370) . Higher yields of both cultivars were obtained through 15-cm between- and with 1.5 –cm within-row spacings .seed yield/plant for Precoz was higher than that of Giza370 , and was not affected by seasons . between-and within- row spacings. And the interaction of these main effects.

Precoz provided shorter plants , and fewer branches as well as lower number of pods per plant , but had more seeds/pod and 100-seed weight than Giza370 . No effect between row spacing was predicted on seed yield components; except for number of pods/plant , which increased when row spacing increased to 30 cm apart. Within-row spacing affected all seed yield components . In general , lentil yield per unit area increased as plant density increased . the higher seed yield appeared to be as a function of number of plants per area . therefore , plant population should be defined not only in terms of number of plants unit area . but also in terms of the arrangements of these plants on the ground . our results suggested that 444 plants/m2 resulted from plant population arrangement of 15 cm between rows and 1.5 cm within row is the optimum plant population for maximum lentil seed yield .
