Physiological Behaviour of Some Rice Cultivars under Different Sowing Dates and Seedling Ages.

Abstract: ABSTRACT
Two field experiments were conducted at the Experimental Farm of Rice Research and Training Center (RRTC), Sakha. Kafr- El-Sheikh, Egypt, in 2003 and 2004 summer seasons to study the physiological behavior of four rice cultivars i.e. (two hybrid rice) medium duration (H5) and short duration (H4) and (two inbred rice) medium duration (Sakha 104) and short duration (Sakha 102).under four dates of sowing (April 20th, May 1st, May 10thand May 20th) and three seedling ages (25,30 and 35days). The studied parameters were maximum tillering stage (MT), panicle initiation (PI) and heading date (HD), leaf area index (LAI), sink capacity {number of spikelets / m2 (1000)}, spikelets/ leaf area ratio, panicle weight, number of filled grains (%) , grain filling period and grain yield.
The results revealed that the number of days from sowing up to maximum tillering (M.T.), panicle initiation (P.I.) and heading dates (H.D.), were gradually decreased by delayed sowing from April 20th up to May 20th. Moreover, it was noticed that medium duration cultivars (H5and Sakha 104) were more sensitive to day length and gave higher Basic Vegetative Phase (B.V.P.) and Photo-sensitive phase (P.S.P) than short duration cultivars (H4 and Sakha 102).
Early sowing date on April 20th gave the highest values of leaf area index (LAI), sink capacity {number of spikelets / m2 (1000)}, spikelets/ leaf area ratio, panicle weight, number of filled grains (%) , grain filling period and grain yield. While, late sowing on May 20th gave the lowest values in the previous attributes.
Planting the rice with young seedlings (25 day old seedlings) gave the highest values in all mentioned attributes, but the old seedlings (35day old seedlings) gave the lowest values.
H5 hybrid rice cultivar surpassed the other cultivars in leaf area index (LAI), sink capacity {number of spikelets / m2 (1000)}, spikelets/ leaf area ratio, panicle weight, number of filled grains (%), grain filling period and grain yield, followed by H4 hybrid rice, then, Sakha 104 and Sakha 102 gave the lowest values except for grain filling period where Sakha 104 gave the lowest value.
So, the interaction between H5 hybrid rice with seedling age (25 days) gave the highest values for panicle weight(g), sink capacity and grain yield(ton /ha.). While Sakha 102 cultivar with seedling age 35 days gave the lowest values. Also, early sowing on (April 20th) with H5 hybrid rice surpassed the second , third and fourth sowing dates with all rice cultivars under the study for sink capacity and LAI. While, sowing at May 20th with Sakha 102 gave the lowest values.
