Broomrape (OROBANCHE CRENATA FORSK) control in Faba Bean (Vicia Faba l.) and peas (PISUM SATIVUM L.) with imazaquin and glyphosate herbicides
Abstract: Nine experiments, six in faba bean and three in peas were conducted in pots at Giza station during 1987/88,1988/89 and 1989/90 growing seasons.The aim of this study is to determine the effectiveness of imazaquin, imazethapyr and glyphosate herbicides for broomrape control. In addition to anatomical response of broomrape for imazaquin and glyphosate was done. Results showed that, imazaquin, imazethapyr and glyphosate were very effective against broomrape. Two applications of imazaquin at 7.9 or 9.4 g a.i./fed.gave the same effect of two glyphosate applications at 27 g a.i./fed., both applied after 7 and 9 weeks from sowing, whereas three applications of imazaquin at 4.7 g a.i./fed., gave the same effect with three applications of glyphosate at 27 g a.i./fed., both applied at 7,9 and 11 weeks after sowing. Imazethapyr showed promising effect against broomrape when applied at 4.2 g a.i./fed., in three applications after 7,9 and 11 weeks from sowing broomrape in peas can be effectively controlled by single application of imazaquin at 12.6 g after 7 weeks from sowing or three applications at 4.7 g a.i./fed. which applied after 7,9 and 11 weeks from sowing.the previos treatments did not give any phitotoxicity on faba bean and peas plats and improved their growth. The efficiency of such herbicides are related to the morphological and anatomical malformation in broomrape cells, tissues and vascular vessels which accomplished by parasite death. It is necessary in future for testing these promising rates under field conditions with naturally infested broomrape parasite.
