Evaluation of some insecticides and thier joint action against the cotton leafworm, spodoptera littoralis (BOISD) on letuce vegetable plant, Lactuca sativa l.

Abstract: Eleven insecticides including five single insecticides and six binary mixtures have been advantageously used to evaluate their protective efficiency against the cotton leafworm, Spodoptera littoralis (Boisd.) and to determine the potent action of the mixtures against the pest on the lettuce plant, Lactuca sativa L.
The efficiency of these compounds was recorded on the basis of reduction percentages in the number of larvae after periods of 2, 5, 7, 10, 13 and 15 days from insecticidal spraying. Higher reduction in percentages of the number of larvae was occurred by using mixtures of chlorpyriphos and profenofos with chitin synthesis inhibitors especially after 5-days from insecticidal spraying. This result was confirmed during both Nili and Summer plantations approximately. It was noticed that the binary mixtures were almost equitoxic behaved to be more effective than the chitin synthesis inhibitors; whereas the organophosphorus compounds exhibited the least efficiency. The efficiency of the insecticides as well as their mixtures could be descendingly arranged as follows : chlorpyriphos + Atabron, chlorpyriphos + Cascade, profenofos + Atabron, Atabron, chlorpyriphos + Match, profenofos + Cascade, profenofos + Match, Cascade, Match, chlorpyriphos and profenofos. The corresponding mean reduction percentages in the number of larvae during Summer plantation were : 88.08, 85.18, 83.20, 81.45, 81.27, 81.25, 79.70, 79.18, 75.93, 69.83 and 67.05, respectively; whereas during the Nili plantation, the insecticide and their mixtures could be descendingly arranged as : chlorpyriphos + Atabron, chlorpyriphos + Cascade, profenofos + Atabron, Atabron, profenofos + Cascade, chlorpyriphos + Match, Cascade, profenofos + Match, Match, ehlorpyriphos and profenofos. The corresponding reduction percen-tages were : 91.12, 89.47, 85.80, 85.78, 85.67, 84.93, 83.40, 82.92, 80.47, 72.30 and 70.67, respectively. Chlorpyriphos and profenofos represented group of much less efficacy as compared with the mixtures and chitin synthesis inhibitors, respectively, in the two plantations.
