Preference of some insects for certain Alfalfa,Medicago satival, cultivars.

Abstract: Host preferance of three local alfalfa cultivars (Ismailial , Ismalia 94 and Sewa) and the imported cultivar WL-605, by insects was studied over two growing seasons 02- 2003 and 03-2004 in Ismailia Governorate. WL-605 was the most attractive for insects (20.3 insects/ stem) comprised of 10.8 aphids, 5.2 thrips,3.8 leaf miners and 0.5 insects/ stem of alfalfa weevil. Ismailia 1 cultivar had the least numbers (5.6 insect/stem) represented by 2.2 aphids, 1.7 thrips, 1.5 leaf miners and 0.2 weevil, insect/stem. The remaining cultivars lied between the two fonner cultivars. Sewa cultivar had 6.6 insect/stem represented by 2.4 aphid, 1.9 for each of thrips and leaf miner and 0.4 insect/stem alfalfa weevil; whereas Ismailia 94 cultivar had 5.9 insect/stem 2.2 aphids, 1.7 thrips, 1.5 leafminers and 0.2 insect/stem alfalfa weevil. Both fresh yield and dry matter were negatively affected by the population density of the insects. The fresh yields were 2.363, 2.344, 2.064 and 1.878 ton/plot and dry matter percentage were 19.95, 19.85: 18.88 and 18.09 % for the tested cultivar Ismailia. Ismailia 94, Sewa and WL 605, respectively.
