Effect of chlorfluazuron, nuclear polyhydrosis virus (slnpv) and bacillus thuringiensis on some biological and enzymes activity of cotton leaf worm, spodoptera littoralis (bois)

Abstract: The cotton leaf worm, Spodoptera littoralis (Boisd.) is a highly polyphagous insect pest. The extensive use of insecticides to control S littoralis . larvae has led to its resistance to various classes of insecticides (Tabashink et al., 1987) residual toxicity and environmental pollution (Frank et al ., 1990) and negative effects on non-target organisms (Franz ,1974) The foregoing problems and hazards that have arisen as a result of using conventional insecticides are incentives for researching alternative controls agents with new modes of action. Among these agents are insect growth regulators and microbial control agents Many IGRs have shown heigh potentiality against lepidopterous insects (EI-Deeb et al., 1991; Abdalla and Sammour, 1992; Fisk and Wright, 1992; Rao et al., 1994 and Sokar, i995).They also affect activity in S. littoralis (Ahmed et al., 1990; Auda and Salem, 1997; Farag, 2001and Abdel-al, 2003). The effective utilization of viral and bacterial agents in integrated pest control programs necessitate more understanding of factors involved in viral or bacterial transmission to susceptible insects. The successful use of Bacillus thuringiensis to control some insect pests specially the cotton leaf worms S.littoralis, S. exigua and the black cutworm Agrotis ipsilon using leaf dipping technique of their preferable natural host plant (castor oil plant or cotton plant leaves)that stimulates the natural conditions more closer (Zaki, 1993).The bacterium B. thuringiensis, proved to be a highly successful weapon for fighting some agricultural pests and it offer many advantages over chemical insecticides. B. thuringiensis is known to be one of the most pathogenic species of bacteria, which induce larval mortality after a course of infection stages. The interest of using such agent as a microbial biolarvicide was increased during the past decade (Dulmage and Co-operators, 1981).
