EFFECT OF Aphis gossypii (GLOVER) AND WEEDS MANAGEMENT IN CUCUMBER AND MASKMELON FIELDS ON INFESTATION WITH APHID IN NEIGHBOURING COTTON FIELDS

Abstract: Cotton aphid, Aphis gossypii (Glover) can be managed in cucumber and muskmelon (cantalope) field by hand hoeing of weeds two times during the season and spraying of chloropyrifosmethyl (Reldan 50% EC), dimethyl- phosphoro- dithioates (Malathion 57% EC), or mineral oil such as Caple-2, botanical oil such as Jojoba oil or neem seed extract or by using Caple-2 + micronized sulpher.
The effect of A. gossypii and weeds management was monitored by counting the cotton aphid colonies, which induces the new infestation in neighbour cotton fields. The investigations were conducted at Seds district Beni-Suef Governorate during 2001 and 2002 cotton seasons.
The results obtained indicated that weed management and spray with the insecticide, Reldan 50% EC in cucumber and muskmelon fields had significant effect on reduction of infestation with cotton aphid, A. gossypii in cotton fields.
Also, another significant effect had been achieved by using the mineral oil (Caple-2) + micronized sulpher.
