Evaluation of egg quality traits in four locally developed strains of chickens.

Abstract: A total number of 800 eggs from four locally developed strains of chickens (Golden Montazah,Mandarah, silver Montazah and Matrouh) was taken (200 eggs from each strain) in consecutive four months to evaluate egg quality traits in these locally developed strains. The following results were obtained:
Golden Montazah strain had the highest estimates of egg weight, egg shape index, yolk weight and yolk index, while Matrouh strain characterised with the lowest estimates. Mandarah and silver Montazah strains were intermediate.
Golden Montazah and Mandarah strains had higher values of albumen weight and albumen index, while silver Montazah and Matrouh strains had lower values.
Golden Montazah had higher score of Haugh Unit than the other strains due to higher albumen weight .
Contrary to Matrouh strain, golden Montazah was characterized with higher egg weight, albumen index, shell weight and lower shell thickness.
All estimates, except shell thickness, were improved by aging. The statistical differences between strains, sires within strains, dams within sires within strains and months were highly significant in many traits of egg characteristics, however, certain traits showed no significant differences between their averages.
Phenotypic correlations among traits of egg weight and its components were positively significant, indicating that genes controlling egg weight are pleotropically acting on egg components. Therefore, direct selection for increasing egg weight could be accompanied by an increase in each trait of egg components.
