Post-Partum productive and reproductive responses of lactating friesian crossbred cows to fat-supplemented diet

Abstract: Experiments were performed to determine the effect of dietary fat as raw soybeans (R-SB), heated soybeans (H-SB), or calcium soap of fatty acids (Ca-SFA; 3.4% DM) added to the ration for 120 d from parturition on productive and reproductive performance of crossbreed (Friesian x Baladi) cows. .
Dry matter intake was numerically increased in treated cows. The supplemented diet contained more lipids, resulted in increasing daily energy intake. Cows fed H-SB or Ca-SFA diet produced more milk, fat, and protein. Cows fed H-SB or Ca-SF A diet were more rapid to regain the BW loss and recovered to the weight at parturition at wk 9 PP. Body weight of the R-SB cows decreased more and did not recovered to the pre-trial BW until the treatments were terminated at 120 days postpartum. Cows fed H-SB or Ca-SF A diet commenced ovarian cyclicity later than control as shown by frequency distribution of the time that required to reach cyclic plasma progesterone concentration or behavioral estrus. Conception rate from first and second AI was greatest for cows fed H-SB or Ca-SFA diet. A higher proportion of cows from the latter two diet-groups was pregnant at 120 d after calving.
It could be concluded that treating ration of crossbreed lactating cows with H-SB or Ca-SFA early in lactation increased milk yield, FCM, and milk protein. These treatments can positively influence the reproductive performance, may be by altering both ovarian follicle and corpus luteum via improving energy status and increasing precursors for the synthesis of reproductive hormones such as steroids and prostaglandins. Consequently, it has beneficial effects on conception and pregnancy rates.
