Effect of aflatoxin in contaminated rations on performance of sheep

Abstract: This study was carried out at Animal House of Animal Nutrition Research Department, Animal Production Res. Institute. This work aims to study the effect of H2O2 and NH3 gas treatment on detoxification of aflatoxin-contaminated concentrate rations , also the effect of these treatments on AFB1 concentration in treated diets and consequently on the performance of sheep .
Two parts of study were conducted , the first part include detoxification trails using H2O2 (3 - 6%), NH3 gas (2-3 %) and microwave (3-6 min) for 6 treating contaminated ingredients (yellow corn grain , cotton seed meal , soybean meal , sunflower meal , linseed meal and rice bran) with AFB1 .
The second applied part was to study the effect of rations namely, Aflatoxin-free ration (G1), Aflatoxin H2O2 treated ration (G2), Aflatoxin-ammoniated ration (G3) and Aflatoxin-contaminated ration (G4) on the performance of sheep.
Results could be summarized as following:
1 Detoxification with 6% H2O2 and 3% NH3 gas showed better results for all tested ingredients.
2 Detoxification with microwave setting on 3 rd level for 6 mints. Appear to be the best for all tested ingredients.
3 Maximum production of AFB1 occurred at 22-30 C° in July and August for the tested ingredients stored indoor.
4 Detoxification with NH3 gas showed the best digestibility coefficient results, followed by H2O2 treated ratio
5 Average DMD% of G3, recorded the highest value (70.30 %), followed by G2 (69.17%) and G1 (66.57 %), while G4 showed the lowest DM, CP and CF digestibility. The later showed gradually decreased from 39.75% at 1st month to 31.68% at 3 rd month of experiment.
6 Average daily weight gain of rams fed G3 recorded the highest value (125.11 gm), followed by G2 (114.78 gm) during the overall period, while G4 tended to decline from (104 gm) at 1st month to (61 gm ) at 3rd month..
7 Average feed efficiency values expressed as kg TDN/kg gain were 6.90 and 5.92 for rams fed G3 & G2 rations, respectively, while rams fed G4 recorded the lowest efficiency value (7.01).
8 Economical efficiency was 3.64, 3.83, 3.88 L.E. /kg weight for G1, G2, G3, respectively, while G4, being 5.87 LE. / Kg weight.
9 Animals fed G4 recorded the highest values of AST & ALT transaminase; AP; urea and creatinine, while total protein, Albumin, Globuline were decreased gradually, but, G1, G2 and G3 were equal at these parameters.
10 G3 recorded higher average dressing % 55.11%, followed by G1 and G2 (56.77 &53.09 %), while G4 recorded the lowest value (46.59 %).
11 Tissue residues of AFB1 and (M1 & M2) were detected in lowest values in muscles or other edible organs for detoxificated groups (G2 & G3) or G1, while G4 recorded 20 % AFB1 in different organs especially in liver.
From the previous results it could be concluded that:
Detoxification of feedstuffs and improving its feeding quality and sequence small
Ruminant's performance could be occurred by using 3% NH3 gas or 6% H2O2.
