Comparison between animal protein and plant protein supplemented with the growth promoter enramycin in broiler chick diets

Abstract: A total number of 2700 one day old unsexed broiler chicks (1350 Avian 43 and 1350 Arbor Acres broiler chicks) were used to study the effect of adding Enramycin as growth promoter to plant diet (PPS) on performance of broiler chicks compared to either animal (AP) or plant (PP) protein used separately. Broilers were feed on starter diet containing 23 % CP and 3100 Kcal ME/Kg diet from 1-7 days, after which they were divided into 6 treatment groups. Two strains of broiler chicks (Avian and Arbor Acres ) were fed on three types of diet (animal protein, plant protein and plant protein supplemented with Enramycin) in 2x3 factorial arrangement. The birds of each strain were randomly divided into 3 equal groups with three replicates of 150 bird each. Fish meal and poultry by product meal were used as animal protein source, while corn gluten meal was applied as plant protein source. Enramycin was added to plant protein diet at the recommended level of 0.02 %of the diet. birds were reared under similar conditions of management up to 7 weeks of age.
The results of body weight, weight gain and feed conversion showed that chicks fed on plant protein diet supplemented with Enramycin (PPS) were significantly superior than those fed on either animal protein diet (AP) or plant protein diet (PP). Also, Avian chicks strain recorded higher (P<0.05) body weight and weight gain values than Arbor Acers chicks. Data of dressing and giblets percentages showed no significant differences regarding type of dietary protein or chick strain. Enramycin supplementation improved significantly crude protein and ether extract digestibility.
Addition of Enramycin to plant protein diet resulted in higher relative economic efficiency value than those of either animal protein diet (AP) or plant protein diet without supplementation (PP).
