Sunflower seed meal as a partial or full replacement for soybean meal in low and high energy diets of Muscovy ducks.

Abstract: An experiment was conducted to study the possibility of partial or full replacement of soybean meal with sunflower seed meal (SFM) that contains 28.05% CP, 9.98% EE, 28.0% CF and 1717 Kcal ME/Kg.
One hundred and eight Muscovy ducklings, 5- week- old were assigned equally into 6 dietary treatments in a 3X2 factorial design of the treaments. Three levels of SFM, 0.0% (control, corn- soybean meal diet), 15% SFM or 30% SFM, (full replacement for soybean meal) were used with two levels of ME (2800 and 3000 Kcal/Kg). Each dietary treatment included three replicate pens with 6 ducklings per treatment, 3 females having nearly similar body weights. Parameters measured were body weight, feed conversion, mortality rate, nutrient digestibility, carcass measurements and chemical composition of meat.
Results indicated no significant differences in body weight and feed conversion of 10- week- old ducklings fed diets containing 15.30% SFM or control soybean diet. Also, there were no significant differences due to dietary energy. Mortality rate was 0.0% for ducks fed dietary treatments during 6-10 weeks of age. Significantly improved with SFM diets. No significant differences were observed in carcass data or commercial carcass cuts due to dietary treatments. However female ducks had significantly lower body weight, feed conversion and higher dressing % and abdominal fat % than male ducks with no significant interaction between sex and dietary treatment. Boneless Muscovy duck meat at 10 weeks of age contains 56.53% moisture 16.54% protein, 25.4% fat and 1.5% ash with no significant differences due to sex or dietary treatment.
It is concluded that SFM could replace partly, (15% of the diet) or fully (30%of the diet) soybean meal in the duck diets with the adjustment of amino acids and energy level without affecting performance or carcass yield.
