Effect of crossing native baladi black with New Zealand white rabbits on thigh and hind leg lengths

Abstract: Data on 623 weanling rabbits which consists of 346 straight-bred and 277 cross-bred individuals, produced through a crossbreeding experiment, from two breeds, one exotic, New-Zealand White (NZW) and local breed, Baladi-Black (BB) as well as their reciprocal crosses. The study aimed at the evaluation of the heterotic and crossbreeding effects (i.e. Additive Direct and Maternal) of biweekly progeny thigh (hip) length rrL) and hind leg length (HL) measures from (weaning) at 6 weeks through 12 weeks of age, as well as the estimation of the non-genetic factors affecting these measures.
Effects studied were month of birth (MOB), which exerted a significant effect on both traits at all ages considered Mating group (MG) affected TL at 6 and 8 but at 12 wk of age for HI. Feed type on both traits and Parity on TL have significant effects at all ages considered excluding the 6th wk of age. Sex affected HL from 6 through 10 wk of age significantly. Average regression coefficients of TL and HL on their age relevant body weight (BW) were highly significant at all considered ages, as well as partial regressions within MG at 8 but at 10 wk of age for TI. Average and partial regressions of Tl and HL on Litter size at birth (LSB) was statistically less effective.
Positive and significant direct heterotic ( H1 ) effects were detected for HL at 12 wk of age. Direct additive effects were insignificantly but at 6 wk of age for TL in favor of BB. Maternal additive effect (Gm ) on TL and were insignificantly Excluding at 8 and 10 wk of age for TL in favor of NZW.
Key Words: Rabbit crossing, thigh length, Hind Leg Length, direct and
