Fasciola gigantica infection and its effect on some serum biochemical parameters related to carbohydrate metabolism in growing lambs

Abstract: This study is carried out to evaluate the inf1uence of Fasciola gigantica infection on some blood enzyme (aspartate aminotransferase (AST), lactatc hydrogenase (LDH), gamma glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT), and alkalin phosphatase (ALP). Also to evaluate its effect on total serum protein, alhumin, globulin, sodium, calcium, glucose and keton bodies as well as on body weight of growing lambs. Twenty male lambs,4 months of age, were divided into three groups each of 5 lambs. The 1st 2nd ,and 3rd group were infected orally with 100, 200 and 400 fasciola gigantica metacercaria respectively and the 4th lIninfectcd group was considered as control .The results revealed that fasciola gigantica infection causes increasing in AST, LDH, GGT and ALP activities ill all infected groups, 2 weeks post-infection. The maximum level of enzymes were observed after 2 months post-infection with the highest dose of metacercariae . It was noticed that a significant reduction in serum albumin, sodium, calcium and glucose levels were detected in all infected groups compared with control group starting from 2 weeks till the end of experiment. In contrast keton bodies levels were elevated in all infected groups .From this study, it could be concluded that damage caused during the time of migration of fasciola gigantica flukes through the liver may involve appetite depression and lead to energy deficiency (low glucose) , ketosis, and decrease in body weight of growing lambs. Therefore, the treatment of infected animals and nutritional management are highly recommended.
