A study on the prediction of Doe rabbits transmitting ability

Abstract: The objectives of this study were; evaluating litter and some individual traits, testing the effect of different factors on these traits, estimating the variance components and genetic parameters and finally to predict the transmitting ability for the base animals and their progeny considering the relationship coefficients matrix, utilizing the animal model.
Litter traits were litter size and weight at birth (LSB, LWB), at 21 days (LS21 and LW21), at weaning (LSW and LWW), gestation length (GL) and pre-weaning litter mortality at 21 days and at weaning (PM21 and PMW), and the individual traits were weaning weight (WW) and liveability at weaning (LIV). In general, the main effects parity (P) and year (Y) did not contribute significantly in explaining the variation of doe traits while the opposite trend was observed for LSB and effect of month on LWB, LW21, LWW and PM21. On the other hand, they were significant in explaining the variation of individual traits with the exception of season effect on LIV and year of production and sex on WW. Heritability (h2) estimates ranged between 0.00 to 0.14 for litter sizes and between 0.00 to 0.59 for litter weights. Repeatability estimates ranged between 0.002 and 0.14 for litter sizes and between 0.003 to 0.59 for litter weights. The correlation coefficients between daughters and both dams and sires transmitting ability (TA) were 0.64 and 0.14 for weaning weight (WW) and 0.64 and -0.28 for LIV respectively. While rank correlation coefficients were 0.61 and 0.14 for WW and 0.67 and - 0.3 for LIV between daughters and both dams and sires, respectively.
