Effect of vitamin c and cumin supply on oxidative profile, some gastrointestinal enzymes and performance of growing rabbits during hot season

Abstract: The purpose of the present study was to examine the effect of vitamin C and cumin on oxidative stress profile, some gastrointestinal enzymes activity and the performance in growing
rabbit during hot season. Eighty six New Zealand White (NZW) rabbit weaned kits aged 4th weeks with average weights (569.2±23.5g). NZW rabbit kits were divided into 3 groups; 1st group: control group; 2nd group: kits were fed diet contained 200 mg vitamin C/kg diet (Vit.C) and 3rd group: kits were fed diet contained 10g cumin/kg diet (Cumin). During suffering heat stress the nitric acid and lipid peroxidation were inhibited significantly (P < 0.05) by supplying ascorbic acid. Supplying cumin, (1%) resulted to decrease lipid peroxidation and nitric oxide by about 7.5 and 27.4%, respectively compared with control. Vitamin C elevation of the specific activities of amylase and protease enzymes in small intestinal contents compared with control group by 73.4 and 53.1%, respectively. There was positive influence of cumin on the activity of amylase. Vit C and Cumin seeds were resulted to increasing monocytes and eosinophile (%) than that control. Body gain and daily feed intake not were improved by supply Vit.C group and cumin from 4th to 10th week of age but, the feed conversion was improved about by 29.6% and 15.8%, respectively compared to control group. Mortality (%) in Vit.C and Cumin groups was lower than that of control by about 1.5 and 9.2%, respectively. These results declared that supply with Vit.C lead enhancing the physiological capacity by inhibiting the oxidative processes and reducing the rectal temperature of growing rabbits while, cumin was enhanced the antioxidant capacity and catalase. These were reflected on improved the feed conversion and reduce mortality rate.
