Effect of milk production, sire, age of cow dry period on calving interval and days open in Friesian cow in Egypt

Abstract: A data file containing 1098 lactation records of Friesian cows belonging to Animal Production Research Institute. Ministry of Agriculture Egypt. Effects of sire milk production, age of cow, month of calving and breeding and dry period on each of calving interval and days open traits were studied. The sire effect was significant effect (P<0.01) on both calving interval and days open. Each of calving interval and days open were affected by milk production during current lactation but not affected significantly by previous lactations. Although, cows with higher production during current or previous lactations had shorter calving intervals or days open. Age of cow did not significantly affect calving interval or days open. However, cows with more than 70 month of age had higher calving interval and days open. Differences among months of calving were significant (P<0.05) for both calving interval and days open. While, month of breeding did not affect either calving interval nor days open. However, calving interval and open tended to be shorter in cold than in warm months for both calving and breeding months. Previous dry period had significant (P<0.05) effect on calving and days open. Calving interval and days open were shorter for cows with over 100 days of dry period than cows with less than 100 days.
