Data analysis on the performance for three strains of duck in Egypt 1- brooding period and their economic efficiency

Abstract: Results were built upon the data of 436422 ducklings day-old represented three different strains (Pekin, Muscovy and Khaki- Campbell)located in Behaira , Kafr El-Sheikh, Demietta, Gharbeya, Giza and Dkhalia Governorates. The data were taken through the 0-3 weeks of age during the period from 1990 to 2000 belongs to ten farms from each of the governmental and private sectors. The traits studied were feed intake (g.feed/duckling/day), mortality percentages , costs, returns, economic efficiency and production function at the and of brooding period (0-3 week of age).
The main results could be summarized as follows:
1. The averages of feed intake (g.feed/duckling/day) for combined sexes were 54.41, 52.84 and 53.61 g. for the Pekin, Muscovy and Khaki-Campbell ducklings, respectively. The season averages of this trait were 53.01, 55.59, 53.79 g. in the winter, spring, summer and fall seasons, respectively. The sector means were 55.27 and 50.82 g.for the governmental and private sectors, respectively.
2. The averages of mortality percentages were 3.78, 6.05 and 5.49% for the pekin, Muscovy and Khaki-Campbell ducklings, respectively. The season averages of this trait were 4.85, 4.40, 4.87 and 4.29% for the winter, spring, summer and fall seasons, respectively. The means of sectors were 4.39 and 5.34% for the governmental and private sectors, respectively.
3. The fixed costs were 5.65, 3.22 and 6.18% and those for the variable costs were 94.34, 96.78 and 93.82% from the total costs. The duck and feed costs are the two most important cost factors, the first item accounting for 41.52, 69.52 and 41.00% and the second item accounting for 35.01, 17.57 and 34.29% from the total costs of producing 100 brooding ducklings. For 35.01, 17.57 and 34.29% from the total costs of producing 100 brooding ducklings.
4. The average of total returns /total costs per 100 ducklings were 1.33, 1.43 and 1.38% for the Pekin, Muscovy and Khaki- Campbell ducks, respectively.
