Egg quality traits as affected by strain, housing system and time of egg collection

Abstract: The study was conducted to determine the effect of strain, housing system and time of egg collection on egg quality traits at peak of egg production. A total number of 600 pullets (20 weeks old) from five locally strains of chickens (Inshas, Golden Montazah, Mandarah, Silver Montazah and Matrouh). Each strain (120 pullets) was housed randomly under two systems (floor pens and cages batteries). Each housing system (60 pullets from each strain) was divided randomly into 3 replicates (20 pullets). Eggs were collected individually daily from each strain at 9.00,11.00,13.00 and 15.00 hr. At 32 to 36 weeks of age (peak of egg production) nine eggs for each replicate were collected daily. Data of egg quality were recorded on 360 eggs.
The results were obtained
1nshas and Golden Montazah strains have higher (P < 0.05 and 0.01) means of egg specific gravity and egg shape index than the other strains, while the differences among strains on egg weight did not show any significant.
Mandarah, Silver Montazah and Inshas strains have the higher (P < 0.05) means of albumen percentage than Golden Montazah and Matrouh strains, while the Golden Montazah have higher (P < 0.01) score of Haugh unit than the other strains.
Golden Montazah and Matrouh strains have higher (P < 0.05 and0.01) means of yolk weight, percentage and Yolk! Albumen ratio than Silver Montazah, lnshas andMandarh strains, while Mandarah and Inshas have higher (P < 0.01) means of yolk index than the other strains.
lnshas and Golden Mandarah strains have higher (P < 0.05) means of shell weight, percentage and thickness than Mandarh, Silver Montazah and Matrouh strains, while the differences among strains in shell membrane thickness did not show any significant in this aged Eggs laid in cage had higher (P < 0.05 and 0.01) egg shape index, yolk index. shell weight, percentage and thickness than those laid in the floor.
Egg /aid in the afternoon had higher (P < 0.05) egg shape index, egg specific gravity and shell thickness than did eggs laid in the morning.
Phenotypic correlations among traits of egg weight and its components were positively significant (P < 0.01), indicating that genes controlling egg weight are pleotropically acting on egg components.
