Selection for improving some economic traits in deceloped Inshas chickens strain

Abstract: The present study was carried out during two successive breeding seasons, 2003 and 2004, at the experimental station of Sakha Poultry Farm, Kafr- EL-Sheikh. Animal Production Research Institute, Ministry of Agriculture. The investigation aimed to improve the genetic potentialities of some economic traits in developed Inshas chickens strain through selection. The present results showed that:-.
- Average egg number during the first 90 days of laying the base and first generation were 39.79 and 55.21 eggs fur the selected line. The realized response was 15.35 egg.
- Average age at sexual maturity of the base and first generation were 175.9 and 163.7 days for the selected line. Selected line hens matured earlier than those of the control line by - 12.29 days. Age at maturity, body weight at sexual maturity,- mature body weight and egg weight showed negative correlated response to selection for increasing egg number during the first ninety days of laying. Selection for increasing egg number during the first 90 days of laying improved egg mass and feed conversion.
-Egg number till 42 and 65 weeks of age were increased in selected line comparing with the control line during the first generation by 22.25 and 32.30 eggs, respectively.
- Selected line in the first generation had heavier egg mass at the 90 days of laying, 42 and 65 weeks of age.
- Selected line had better feed conversion during the first 90 days of laying, till 42 and 65 weeks of age than the control line. Also, fertility and hatchability percentages for selected line in first generation had better than the control line.
- Heritability estimates for egg number during the first ninety days of laying for selected line based on sire plus dam components of variance 'were 0.31±0.32 in the first generation.
- Negative genetic and phenotypic correlations were found between egg mumber and age at sexual maturity and feed conversion while positive correlations were found between egg number and egg weight and egg mass during the first generation.
