A study on some physiological parameters in baladi and friesian cows
Abstract: This work was carried out at El-serw animal production research station to compare between Baladi and Friesian cows in their reproductive performance (the intervals from calving to: complete uterine involution, first ovulation, and first astrus; number of ovulations in the first 60 days postpartum and incidence of quiet ovulation), some physiological parameters (respiration rate, and rectal temperature) and the changes in the concentration of plasma progesterone, triiodothyinine and thyroxin.
The results showed that baldai, compared with friesian cows, had significantly (P<0.05) shorter intervals from calving to complete uterine involution (-16.9%), first ovulation (-12.0%) first estrus (-15.8%), while the number of ovulations in the first 60 days after calving was significantly (P<0.05) higher by 30.8% in Baladi than in friesian cows. However, the incidence of quiet ovulation was significantly (P<0.05) lower in Baladi than in friesian cows (11.8% vs. 38.5%). Average plasma progesterone concentration as indicated by the area under progesterone curve over the first 60 days postpartum was insignificantly higher in Baladi than in Friesian cows. The averages of thyroid hormone concentration were insignificantly higher in Baladi than those in friesian cows, while, the increase in ambient temperature affected the thyroid hormone concentration in friesian more than in Baladi cows. Respiration rate of friesian cows increased significantly (P<0.05)at 1400h than those in Baladi. However, the rectal temperature of Baladi was insignificantly lower than in Friesian cows. The present results indicate that Baladi cow showed tendency for more regular ovarian activity under the prevailing summer environmental condition, than do Friesian cows.
