Reproductive performance of a herd of Egyptian Baladi cattle

Abstract: The breeding records of 101 and 294 of Baladi heifers and cows, respectively covering the period from 1991-1999, were analyzed to evaluate the reproductive performance of a herd of Baladi cattle raisd at north delta. The overall means of age at first service, age at conception, age at 1st calving and weight at 1st calving were 23.2, 23.7, 33.5 mo and 322.9 kg, respectively, for Baladi heifers. The average number of serivces per conception and conception rate from 1st service forBaladi heifers were 1.19 and 83.1%. the overall means of the period from calving to first service, service period, days open and calving interval for Baladi cows were 55.6, 23.9, 79.5 and 361.1, respectively. Season of calving had significant effect ( P< 0.05) on all traits studied except the service period, while the effects of parity on these traits were insignificant. Number of services per conception and conception rates to 1st service for Baladi cows were 1.46 and 66.7% respectively. Neither parity nor season of calving showed any significant effect on either traits. The average weight at calving for Baladi cows was 367.6 kg, which was affect significantly ( P< 0.001) by parity, while season of calving did not exert any significant effect on this trait. Based on the results of this study, the native Baladi cattle could be characterized as a breed of high fertility, adaptable to the prevailing environmental conditions.
