Hypo-osmotic swelling test of spermatozoa in some native and foreign rabbit breeds raised in Egypt

Abstract: A total of thirty six sexually mature Baladi Black, Baladi Red, Californian and New Zealand
White rabbit bucks of nine months age were used in this experiment to investigate the response of
spermatozoa to hypo-osmotic shock test. The results obtained from this study indicated that, sperm
motility in solutions with different osmolarities (300 or 100 m Osmol/L) were significantly (P <
0.05) higher, while the percentages of spermatozoa with coiled tails or swollen heads were
significantly (P < 0.05) lower at level of 300 m Osmol / L (normal osmolarity) than 100 m Osmol /
L (osmotic stress), during incubation at 37 oC for up to 30 minutes in all studied rabbit breeds.
Advancement of incubation time up to 30 minutes of rabbit semen in solutions with different
osmolarities decreased significantly (P<0.05) semen quality of all studied rabbit breeds. The
progressive sperm grades and percentages in both osmolarities used (300 and 100 m Osmol/L) were
significantly (P<0.05) arranged descendingly, while the percentages of spermatozoa with coiled
tails or swollen heads were significantly (P<0.05) arranged ascending as recorded by Baladi Black
followed by Baladi Red, Californian then New Zealand White rabbit bucks, respectively.
