Effect of supplemental humates on performance and intestinal micro flora of local chicks

Abstract: The current trial was carried out to determine the influence of supplemented humates including humic, fulvic and ulmic acids and some microminerals on performance, carcass traits and intestinal microflora of local chicks. A study was conducted with total 400 one-day-old unsexed local chicks (ElSalam Strain). Chicks were allocated to four dietary treatments (H0, H1, H2 and H3 groups) as completely randomized experimental design. Feed and water offered for ad libitum consumption throughout experimental period (0-12 wk). A basal diet (H0), basal diet plus 0.10 (H1), 0.25 (H2) and 0.40% (H3) humates (BioFarm DRY, Humate, Farmavet International Inc., Kocaeli 41400, Turkey) were offered during experimental period. At the end of the trial (12 wk), 20 birds were slaughtered for measuring carcass traits. Feed intake and body weight were recorded weekly.
The results showed that body weight, feed conversion ratio and carcass traits were positively influenced by humates supplementation (0.25%) during the experiment. Diets supplemented with humates (0.25%) enhanced the digestibility coefficients of most nutrients better than the control. Feeding dietary humates led to sharp reduction in ileal content of coliforms bacteria and bacterial total count, but the number of lactobacilli bacteria was slightly increased. Deal pH values were slightly increased as dietary humates increased gradually. Blood content of total proteins were significantly decreased, while there was no significant effect on blood total lipids 01' cholesterol content.
The results suggested that humates supplementation in local chicks diet can improve the growth of local chicks. This improvement in growth may be due to the modification effect of humates on microbial populations of lumen.
