Effect of dietary protein source on buffalo calves performance at different growing stages

Abstract: Two experiments were carried out to evaluate the effect of using three sources of protein in the concentrate mixture on growth performance of buffalo calves at two phases of age. At the first experiment, eighteen buffalo calves 236 kg average weight and 13 months old were divided into three similar groups (6 for each group). During the feeding trial which lasted 166 days, animals was fed on concentrate mixture (15%CP) containing undecorticated cottonseed meal, sunflower meal or barley radicel with rice straw and hay. At the second experiment, another eighteen buffalo calves 347 kg average weight and 19 months old were divided also into three similar groups (6 for each group).During the feeding trial which lasted 166 days, animals were fed on concentrate mixture( l2%CP) containing the same protein sources .All animals were fed concentrate mixture at 2%, rice straw at 1 % and hay at 0.5% of live body weight. At the of the second experiment carcass traits were determined. The effect of source and level of protein on digestibility, feeding values and economical efficiencies were determined during the two experiments.
Feeding calves on concentrate mixture(15%CP) at first experiment increased digestibilities of most nutrients, feeding values, weight gain, feed conversion and economical efficiency compared with those fed (12% CP) at experiment 2. Calves fed undecorticated cottonseed meal (R11& Rll) and barley radicel(R13& R23) recorded the highest growth performance and economical efficiency compared with those fed sunflower meal (R12 & R22). At the end of the second experiment calves fed undecorticated cottonseed meal recorded the highest values of hot carcass and dressing percentage. However, calves fed on barley radicel ration detected the highest values of economical efficiency, boneless meat percentage and meat :bone ratio.
Results showed that feeding buffalo calves on barley radicel ration had the best economical efficiency followed by the undecorticated cottonseed meal ration then the sunflower meal ration.
