Effect of using ioding salts on thyroid activity, physiological and productive performance of laying hens 1- during the first 90 days of egg production in the first generation

Abstract: A total number of 210 females and 21 males Bandara strain at 16 weeks of age were randomly taken to study the effect of different sources and levels of iodine salts in the diet on the sexual maturity and performance of laying hens. Birds were divided into 7 equal groups each group was consisted of 3 replicates (10 females and one male, each). The 1st group was fed the basal diet only (control), while the 2nd and the 3rd groups fed the basal diet supplemented with calcium iodate (0.48 or 0.80 g/Ton), the 4th and the 5th groups fed the basal diet supplemented with potassium iodate (0.50 or 0.84 g/Ton), and the 6th and the 7th groups fed the basal diet supplemented with potassium iodide (0.39 or 0.65g/Ton). Supplementation layers diet with iodine salts (either iodate or iodide) during laying period improved each of body weight, egg number, egg weight, mass, plasma T3, T4 hormones, matured earlier and consumed more feed than that fed on basal diet. While, fertility percent as well as hatchability of total eggs percent and hatchability of fertile eggs percent were decreased compared to control group. Feeding laying hens on diets containing iodine salts (as calcium iodate) at the two levels (either 0.48 or 0.80 g/Ton) improved egg number, egg mass, percentage of fertility, hatchability of total eggs and hatchability of fertile eggs and shell thickness compared to other iodine salts treatments (potassium iodate or iodide). According the results of this research, it could be recommended adding Calcium iodate at a level of 0.48 g / ton diet to achieve the highest performance of laying hens.
