The effect of replacing maize silage with peanut tops silage on performance of lambs

Abstract: This study was carried out at El-Gemiza experimental station. Animal Production Research Institute, Ministry of Agriculture, Egypt. Twenty four lambs (cross breed Suffolk x Ossimi) at weaning and about 16.71kg live body weight were used to study the effect of replacing peanut tops silage (PTS) with maize silage (MS) on productive performance of lambs. Lambs were assigned to 4 similar groups (6 in each). The experimental rations were composed of : 1st ration (T1): 30% concentrate feed mixture (CFM) of NRC (1986) requirements + (MS) ad lib. 2nd ration (T2): 50% CFM of NRC ( 1986) requirements + (60% MS+40% PTS) as lib. 3rd ration (T3): 50% CFM of NRC (1986) requirements +(40% MS+ 60% PTS) ad lib. 4th ration (T4): 50% CFM of NRC (1986) requirements + PTS ad lib. Four digestibility trails were performed to evaluate the nutritive value of the experimental rations.
The results reveled that, 1- the chemical composition showed that, MS has highly palatable source of energy. While PTS has high Cp content. 2- maize silage had high values of free acetic acid, total acetic acid and lactic acid but PTS had high values of total acidity and ammonia –N. 3- the live body weight of lambs fed the T2 and T3 rations starting from 26 up to 34 weeks were significantly (P<0.05) higher than those fed other treatments. 4- the lambs fed rations containing CFM and combination between MS and PTS ( T2and T3) achieved higher daily gain ( 0.179 and 0.174kg ) than other treatments. 5- the treatments (T2 and T3) were more palatable ( 1.473 and 1.459kg DMI/day). 6- the lambs fed ration T2 and T3 were the most efficient to convert DM to kg gain (8.23 and 8.38 kg DM/kg gain) and highest economical efficiency. 7- the digestibility of various nutrients and nutritive value for the treatments T2 and T3 were higher ( P<0.05) than those of T1 and T4.
It could be concluded that, feeding peanut tops silage with maize silage up to 60% improved lambs performance.
